Set up in 2003 by a medical doctor and his elder brother, The London Tea Company’s reach now spans continents from the West to the Far East and from the tip of South Africa to the northern lights of Scandinavia. Initially thought of as a wish list of the things they’d like to see in the teas that they themselves drink, the vision soon became a successful business combining these very ideals:
Now, having relied on word of mouth recommendations and absolutely no advertising to date, the company receives calls worldwide from companies and individuals who have fallen in love with our flavours and our ethos.
We could have simply set up a tea company that resembled those already established, but we really felt that customers weren’t getting the quality that they deserved and that most large companies were using production methods that didn’t benefit the customer (in terms of tea quality and manufacturing methods), the farmers (in terms of the lowest salaries you could imagine), and the environment (through using harsh chemical fertilizers and pesticides).
The tea industry wasn’t in a good cycle and we wanted to be the ones to make those changes. Plus we felt there was a niche in the market because so many of our friends were also starting to demand more from the products that they were consuming too. People’s expectations were beginning to rise and we really wanted to be part of that new, exciting wave.
Writing this now, in 2010, we see that the world has come a long way in how we understand and appreciate food and drink but we still have a long way to go. We need to convince more people still that they can drink better quality and healthier teas and that the developing world doesn’t have to suffer for us to have more good things.
You have to genuinely believe things can be better to actually make things better and we hope you feel the same way.
